Our House

The pension "Zum Schwarzen Adler" is located in a historical building, that was built in 1736. This is recognizable at the stone above the entrance, that bears the symbolof the brewer and the butcher.

Until 1918 a brewery was situated in the house. The brewed beer was only served to the people from Insingen. It was stored in a forest basement remote two kilometers which was chiseled from the rock. In this basement was a constant temperature of 17 °C in summer and winter.

In the first floor of our house used to be a dance hall in former times, later a knitwear factory. In 1938 the oven was installed they baked regularly for their own use: nine "big blacks", three "white Kipf" and "Plootz" (flat cake). Depending the season, the oven was heated with 22 to 25 meter logs. Formerly there only was a bakehouse on the farm.

At the beginning of the fifties the house was changed into a pension with 21 beds, where also evacuees were accomodated. The rooms were on the first floor. There were four single rooms, seven double rooms and one three bed room. Only two rooms were equipped with running cold water. A chamber pot was in every bedside table. The price for every overnight stay was 3,50 Mark. The breakfast was so ample and good as it is today.

The former servant rooms with raftered ceiling and Lamberie was located on the second floor on the old store room and had neither heating nor water connection and was used later for storage of furniture and old stuff. Today it is a beautiful vacations apartment for four persons.

In the sixties, the kitchen, the bath and the public toilets were modernized. Then the kitchen was the most modern furnishing in the whole village with build in cabinets, stainless steel sink and tiled walls. The same for the tiled bath with bathtub and shower. The toilets got water flushing system - an achievement after the Biedermeier period toilet chair and the later dry loo.

In years 1993 and 94, the house was altered and renovated. Today in "Zum Schwarzen Adler" we have divided 15 beds in five tastefully and generous double rooms and vacations apartments for two to four persons.

Our house - located in the center of the village - has always been the center of rural life in Insingen. In the public house the "milk money" was paid out. The hairdresser cut the villagers hair in an adjoining room. Shoes for repair were collected and fetched by the shoemaker on Saturdays. On Fridays there was a sausage market on the farm. Even today the guestroom is available for different assemblys or private celebrations.
